Follow these easy steps to subscribe to the Platform and get going with your favorite crowdmapping project.

Step 1. Explore the Map and Help pages to familiarize yourself with the portal’s basic functionalities and see what imagery coverage is already procured for the Platform’s pilot phase based on the previously submitted Areas of Interest and potentially available to Subscribers. Testify the Trial Project.

Step 2. Fill out a form complete with your project description  and sign a simple Platform Subscriber Agreement.

Step 3. Congratulations! You are a Subscriber and can now define and submit your Area(s) of Interest (AOI) Requests for new AOIs are processed by Transparent World and procured by Scanex from DigitalGlobe in batches every three months, with submission deadlines of October 30, January 31, April 30, and July 31.  Send archives containing AOI shape-files to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

NOTE: At present, all available WorldView-2 imagery is restricted to DigitalGlobe’s web policy including its six (6) month holdback restriction. However, it is the Platform’s strategic goal to be able to move to a closer-to-real-time imagery availability in the subsequent phases of the initiative

Step 4. If your AOI request is successful in matching available cloud-free imagery, you will be notified by email and can proceed with web access to your AOI and start your crowd-mapping project. You can use the full functionality of the online mapping tools (GeoMixer) freely provided by Scanex with your subscription, or you can choose to use other tools to work on your project

NOTE: The subscriber’s web access to imagery is governed by the terms of the Portal End User License Agreement, or EULA. If you are an “organization involved with non-profit environmental, scientific or educational purposes” and are interested in gaining access to source data for more in-depth processing and analysis, Transparent World can submit on your behalf a special request to DigitalGlobe to allow you to download source data for your specifically stated AOI, however, DigitalGlobe reserves the right to refuse any such request at its sole discretion. Successful applicants for source data will be also eligible to receive a free license for Scanex Image Processor software and free training for satellite data processing from Scanex. (Although you can use any other GIS / remote sensing software of your choice.)

Step 5. Upload and save your project results for submission to the Platform’s project library. You can save partial results as needed if you want other peer practitioners to view and discuss your progress and share their helpful tips. (At present, only GeoMixer tools are available for uploading and saving your project results on the Platform – but we aim, with your help, to expand this functionality to other commonly used applications.)

Step 6. Become a regular on the Platform’s forum – do frequently comment on your own and other projects; learn what others are doing; share your own tips. The busier the Forum and the livelier the discussion – the faster everyone learns from each other!
